Special Reunion Edition 2016

Well here we are, 40 years later.

 *****

Our class celebrated with a 40 year reunion June 24th and June 25 in Mahwah.

With lots to do that weekend, our class celebrated like it was 1976 all over again!

*****

Here is a note from John Dolan:

Classmates,

Sue and I would like to thank all who attended our 40th reunion.  Many of you traveled great lengths to get back to Mahwah and enjoy the activities.

California was represented by Tom Collishaw and Bill Jackson.  Mike Dooley, Jack Lansing and Collette McKeeby came in from Florida.  Joe Cuhaj from Alabama. John Sepp from Michigan and Matt MacDonald from Illinois.  Thank you all for making the extra effort to attend.

Various activities were planned over our reunion weekend and many classmates participated. It all started Friday morning with golf at Spook Rock Country Club. After golf we gathered at my house for some burgers and beers and if that wasn't enough for Friday, we continued our discussions at the   M B and G. Each event was well attended and it gave us an opportunity to reconnect and reflect on the past 40 years.

Saturday morning started with a hike in the Ramapough mountains (thank you Joe Cuhaj for organizing) and a tour of Mahwah High School. Both events enjoyed a beautiful day to explore.
55 classmates attended the main event Saturday night and enjoyed an evening of fun conversation at The Mason Jar.

We hope you had a great time and we appreciate all who participated.

Thank you again to everyone and we look forward to seeing more classmates at the 45th!.

--John

Thank you to Debbie Karpowich O'Connor for sharing her memories, read and enjoy!   -

I am still smiling over the memories shared and the new memories made during the Class of ‘76 40th Reunion weekend. It was so terrific to have our old “gang” reunited, made especially sweet by having Joe Cuhaj travel all the way up from Alabama, as well as Debbie Page Hooper (Class of ‘77) make the trip from Florida. Joe’s Ramapo Reservation hike was an excellent way to reconnect with old acquaintances. The glorious weather, natural beauty of the Reservation, and pace of Joe’s hike provided optimum conditions for friendly conversations and catching up with our classmates. I am in my element in the woods, so this hike was the highlight of the weekend for me. Walking down from the upper lake along the trail, two of our intrepid hikers almost stepped on a snake. The scream that simultaneously left both of them probably could have been heard a mile away in the parking lot! (LOL---Diane Jessop!).

Since we had opted to hike instead of taking a tour of MHS, our little gang went on our own private tour on Friday morning. We met the principal, who could not have been nicer or more accommodating. He gave us his blessing to tour the school at our leisure, which we did. I think sitting in the cafeteria may have brought back the most memories for our group. A walk outside, trying to visualize the old layout of the school with the few remaining buildings, really strained our brains! For me, viewing the football field brought back memories of so many cold, half-time shows, desperately trying to not drop my metal baton with my frozen fingers. It makes me giggle to think that the stadium, set within the beautiful view of our Mahwah “mountains,” speaks “marching band” to me more than “football.”
The night reunion at The Mason Jar was filled with more smiles and laughter. Being pretty reserved by nature, and being totally aware that I didn’t really KNOW too many of my classmates during high school, had me pretty jittery and anxious when we first entered the event. Within moments, all was good as hellos were exchanged with familiar faces and friends.
It was a great weekend. Thanks to all that planned the different events and made it all happen. ---Debbi Karpowich O'Connor

The following is a piece I posted on the Facebook group page.
I thought I would share it here also as not everyone is on Facebook.   --S.

Today, June 15, 2016 marks 40 years since we collected our diplomas and left Mahwah High School. We've taken a variety of paths since our final days on the unique campus up on the hill.
We classmates have grown older and wiser. Some of us have remained in Mahwah over the years while others have taken up residence miles away. But one thing will forever bind us, we are the Mahwah High School Class of 1976 and we were fortunate to share our graduation year along with the celebration of the United States' Bicentennial. (Does any other class have red, white and blue tassles from their graduation cap?)
When we were teens there was no internet, digital camera, cell phone or compact discs. We also managed to survive without flat screen tvs, self-parking cars, dvd and even vhs players. Social media was accomplished by chatting with friends, reading newspaper letters to the editor and listening to the radio – AM and FM. Who could have imagined we would be able to have a personal computer in our homes? And bank machines and debit cards and selfies, how did we live without those? On the flip side, don't you miss 45 rpm records and 8 track tapes? And Pal's Diner and Weaver's?
Wherever we have been or wherever we may be going, Mahwah will always hold an important place in our memories...that includes the town itself, schools we have attended, and friendships we have cultivated along the way.
As we get ready to celebrate the milestone with our 40-year class reunion please take time to remember the following classmates who sadly are no longer with us:
Barbara Rathsack
Anthony Mann
Sandi Kondrat
Jim Alfandre
Jeff Tolen
Tom Reavely
Dick Bjurstrom
Jimmy Bowens
Dave McDonald
Keith Spreen
Thank you all and cheers and  best wishes to the Class of 1976!
Additional note:  Sadly, after posting this, we were informed that Robin Halliday had also passed away, I don't know any details but please keep his family in your thoughts.

Our special guest for this edition of the blog is Glen Guarino, a favorite teacher of many!

Glen has been kind enough to contribute to the blog so let's welcome him. Here's what Glen has to say:

“The class of ‘76 has a special place in my heart. I’m sure the class is living rich lives full of love and kindness.  My classes turned out many nice pieces of work.  The students were hard working and possessed a uniqueness that was wonderful.  I was coaching wrestling and the team had a great year that included winning the districts.  I also coached track and my jumpers won many medals. The year was topped off when my wife and I went on two great vacations.  We went on a Windjammer cruse off the coast of Maine and then to the summer Olympics in Montreal.”

I (Sue) have seen examples of his work on-line and he is truly so talented!  Here are a couple of pieces that you will show you what a fine craftsperson he is!

Glen  designed and made Allegro for an exhibit at New Jersey’s State Performing Arts Center and was later shown at the NJ State Museum.   Photographer Justin Guarino.

Glen  designed Arabesque for a Manhattan client and shown in Noyes Museum of Art and on the cover of Mind & Hand a Schiffer Books publication of contemporary furniture. Photographer Justin Guarino.

If you would like to connect with Glen, you can reach him through these sites.

Visit his web site at http://www.guarinofurnituredesigns.com, he can also be contacted through his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Glen-Guarino-Guarino-Furniture-Designs-162326904129/

and also on the following sites:

Thanks, Glen, for your kind words to our class and for contributing to our blog!

Gary Wilson's wife Linda has a home based jewelry business. She makes unique pieces featuring mixed media/assemblage. Stop by her web site if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind gift!

Classmate Joe Fagan and his wife Ann's son Jack (far left in the photo below) is attending Carnegie Mellon University and is a member of the Tartans football team. The team finished the 2015 season winning the D3 Legacy Bowl. The ranking was 17/247 and the team is returning 80% of the offense and defense.

The 2016-17 school year will be Jack's last year of football and there are hopes for a possible Top 10 finish.

Congratulations, Jack! I also hear that Jack was 1/600 nationwide players (out of the 50,000 D1, D2 and D3 starters) who earned Academic All District Team Honors.

Many thanks to classmates who have pointed me in the direction of some 'missing' classmates! I appreciate you assistance and have made note of their contact information so that we can contact them with class news.

Class directory   Via the survey we were asked if we could compile a directory of classmates so that people could get in touch with each other prior to the reunion.  In order to do this, we will need permission from you to include your contact information on a list and I would gather the names and create an electronic directory to provide to those who would like to receive it for their personal use. Please let me know if you would like to be included.  I would hope to have it ready to go by May 2016 if possible.  Thank you!

Important REUNION information included

Fall 2015 Edition

Thank you for viewing the class blog.

The big news is that our 40-year class reunion will soon be upon us. John Dolan and I have been working at arranging a fun time for everyone. We thank you for your input via the Survey Monkey survey and the follow-up questions via email.  It is our hope that we will be satisfying the wants of our class to ensure a successful reunion.

Here is a basic outline of the events~

Friday, June 24, 2016:  Morning: Golf outing . A limited number of spots are available, please send an email to mahwahhighschool1976@yahoo.com and I will forward your request to John Dolan and he will be in contact with you.  The cost for participants is to be decided.

Afternoon:  BBQ at John Dolan's home in Mahwah - an afternoon of socializing and burgers and hot dogs.

Evening:  Informal drop-in at the Mahwah Bar and Grill as we have done previous years.

Saturday, June 25, 2016:  Morning:  Your choice of:

(A) a guided tour at Mahwah High School. Many classmates have indicated an interest in taking a walk around and seeing how the school grounds have changed since we attended.
OR
(B) a hike through Campgaw. Classmates have also expressed a desire to have a hike and Joe Cuhaj our hiking expert has kindly agreed to help with this activity.

Evening:  Buffet meal and gathering at The Mason Jar restaurant in Mahwah. The restaurant is blocking off a section for our class.  In order for the Mason Jar to give us a specific area of the restaurant we need to have 25 people attend. If we reach that number then they will give us a room of our own.We will be reviewing the buffet menu and anticipate it will be approx $50-$75 per person.  (This does not include liquor costs; each person will be responsible for his/her own bar bills.)

The final cost of the meal and any other related expenses will be made available to you as soon as they have been calculated.

The Mason Jar is located next door to the Fairfield Inn (a member of the Marriott group - you may want to use your rewards to offset hotel costs.)  We will get further information regarding accommodations and pass that along to you.

We hope that these plans are to your liking!  We appreciate the help you have given us as we get the reunion rolling!

*****

PLEASE update your email and mailing addresses - it is especially important now that the reunion is being planned.  Send any new info to mahwahhighschool1976@yahoo.com  OR by replying to an email that I have sent you in the past from my personal email account.
THANK YOU!

*****
Class directory -   Via the survey we were asked if we could compile a directory of classmates so that people could get in touch with each other prior to the reunion.  In order to do this, we will need permission from you to include your contact information on a list and I would gather the names and create an electronic directory to provide to those who would like to receive it for their personal use. Please let me know if you would like to be included.  I would hope to have it ready to go by March or April of 2016 if possible.  Thank you!

A little bit of class business

The survey for the class reunion drew 42 responses.  John Dolan and I are going to be going over the suggestions for our 40th reunion and will endeavor to implement the suggestions into the reunion plans for 2016.  Once plans get organized, you will be kept up to date. As in previous years, we will need to guarantee a minimum number of attendees for whichever venue is chosen.  Thank you for participating in the survey and we look forward to organizing a fun reunion.

If you have moved since the 2011 reunion, PLEASE forward your mailing address to Sue at mahwahhighschool1976@yahoo.com  so that I can update the database.  Also please update your email address if applicable.

Some classmates did not receive the email sent earlier this year asking for blog submissions.  I hope that I was able to forward the email on to those who didn't receive it. In some cases it was because of email address changes; I also am wondering if the email goes into 'junk' mail due to it coming from a Canadian server.  So please check mailboxes periodically to see if I have sent anything. Using the class Facebook page I also let everyone know an email has been sent. Thanks so much!
